Row away!

The passion for boating starts off when a person is still a kid. In many schools across the globe, rowing teams are made so that they could represent the school in the boating events. In India, boating is an old tradition especially in the state of Kerala. Here, ‘snake boat’ races are organized in the months of July, August and September. Each both has about 25 singers and 100-120 oarsmen who row the boat according to a certain rhythm set by the main boatman. Thousands of people cheer their favorite snake boats during these competitions till they win. These are many stories and folklores associated with this kind of boating, which the people still hold dear.

Dragon Boat festival

A traditional Chinese boating festival celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month. The activity of the festival involves the dragon boat race. A dragon boat is nothing but a human powered boat where the use of human strength is massive. The crew involves the Drummer who produces the drumbeat and motivates the crew, the paddlers whose job is to row the boat (this holds the maximum number of crew members) and lastly the steersman who maneuvers the boat according to the course. Being part of the dragon boat was and still is very prestigious in the Chinese culture.

Knowing Rowing

Rowing is a competitive boat sport, propelled by the force of oars and is done mostly on still waters keeping some disciplines in mind. Rowing is considered as one of the oldest sports in Olympics. It started in the late 1430 BC by a very sport loving Egyptian warrior named Amenhotep. The boats used in this sport are broadly semi circular, long and narrow. Different types of boats are used such as single skull, double skull, queep, fours, eights, pairs, etc. The boats are either coxed or coxless. The boats are often called shells. For training purposes the rowers usually take the help of an indoor rowing machine known as the ergometer.
